How Often Should I Change My HVAC Filter In Mamou?
Filter replacement frequency depends on several factors specific to your home and Louisiana's demanding climate conditions.
- Monthly During Peak Cooling Season: From May through September, when your AC runs constantly, check filters monthly and replace when they restrict airflow or look dirty.
- Prairie Dust Impacts Filter Life: Mamou's location on the expansive prairies means agricultural dust and pollen accumulate faster in filters than urban areas experience.
- Pet Hair Requires Frequent Changes: Dogs and cats shedding year-round contribute dander that clogs filters, requiring replacement every 20-30 days with pets in the home.
- Don't Ignore The Warning Signs: Reduced airflow, longer run times, or warmer air from vents all signal a clogged filter, forcing your system to work harder.
- Stock Up On Correct Size: Keep several filters on hand in the correct size so you're never caught without one when replacement time arrives.
What Should I Expect During HVAC Maintenance In Mamou?
Understanding what professional technicians actually do during service helps you recognize quality work versus rushed jobs.
- Complete System Inspection: Technicians examine compressor, blower motor, electrical connections, and safety controls for wear, damage, or potential failures before they occur.
- Refrigerant Check & Adjustment: We measure pressures and temperatures, verifying proper charge, and locate and repair leaks rather than just adding refrigerant.
- Coil Cleaning & Airflow Testing: Indoor and outdoor coils get cleaned, removing efficiency-robbing dirt, and we verify your system moves the proper air volume.
- Electrical Testing & Connections: Capacitors, contactors, and wiring connections are tested to catch failing components before they leave you without heating or cooling.
- Drain Clearing & Thermostat Verification: Condensate drains get cleared, preventing water damage, and thermostats are tested, ensuring accurate temperature control and proper system operation.
Why Won't My AC Keep Up During Mamou Heat Waves?
When temperatures soar into the high 90s, some AC struggles are normal, but others signal problems requiring attention.
- Extreme Heat Challenges Any System: When temperatures exceed 95 degrees with heat indices over 105, even properly sized systems struggle maintaining very cool indoor temperatures.
- Refrigerant Leaks Reduce Capacity: Low refrigerant from leaks dramatically cuts cooling power, making your system unable to keep up even on moderately hot days.
- Dirty Coils Cut Performance: Outdoor coils covered with dirt, grass, and debris can't release heat properly, reducing your system's ability to cool effectively.
- Poor Insulation Lets Heat In: Inadequate attic insulation allows tremendous heat gain on hot days, overwhelming your system's capacity to maintain comfortable temperatures.
- Ductwork Leaks Waste Cooling: Disconnected or leaky ducts dump expensive cooled air into unconditioned attics before reaching your living spaces.
How Can I Prepare For Storm Season In Mamou?
Louisiana's storm season demands preparation to keep your home comfortable if severe weather strikes the area.
- Schedule Pre-Season Maintenance: Have your system checked in early spring before storm season, so needed repairs are completed before the weather gets severe.
- Clear Around Outdoor Unit: Trim trees and bushes near your condenser so falling branches during storms are less likely to damage equipment.
- Know System Locations: Understand where your outdoor unit, disconnect switch, and circuit breakers are located for quick shutdown if flooding threatens.
- Install Surge Protection: Louisiana storms can damage sensitive electronics, and whole-home surge protection prevents expensive repairs after power surges during storms.
- Have Emergency Plans Ready: Know whether you'll use a generator or relocate if power goes out for extended periods during severe weather.
